Maalti. These lovely flowers grew abundantly at 5 Krishna Building, my nana nani’s house. Most versatile – they could be used as an offering to the gods, or made into ornaments, or double up as a tickler for a sleeping person’s ear or could simply be eaten!
The big old fashioned house was home to many generations. It is here that we played cricket and ‘teer kamaan’ in the compound, put a swing at the entrance, bathed at the hand pump, looked out for the Halley’s Comet, ran up the steep narrow stairway several times a day, stood up on the window ledge.
Everyone moved out one by one. The house got locked away and sold. Our inheritance lost forever.
